On June 1, President Obama declared June as LGBT Pride Month, honoring the 1969 Stonewall riots that served as a catalyst to the gay activist movement.
In the declaration, he recognizes the progresses and struggles of the movement and calls on the nation to “turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.”
He also delineates his LGBT-related initiatives, which include “supporting civil unions and Federal rights,” “outlawing discrimination in the workplace,” and repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. He also commented on increasing the quality and quantity of care available to those living with HIV and AIDS on the domestic front.
The first PAGE of website hits for searching about this declaration on Google were articles from religious institutions, save for the White House. Oh wait, that one too.. either way, most of the articles I read, like on OneNewsNow.com, had little addendums about the ’sin’ of homosexuality, however, hilariously enough, a poll on the site showed that 65% of ONN readers approved of Obama’s declaration.
Some GLBT authors have stated that while Obama is making great strides in declaring progress, not much is actually being done, given the recent delay in repealing the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy.
