“There is no universal moral code that should dictate human behavior. There is no such thing as good or evil, there is no universal standard of right and wrong. Our values and morals come from us and belong to us, whether we like it or not; so we should claim them proudly for ourselves, as our own creations, rather than seeking some external justification for them.”

What a conundrum.

I want to hear what you have to say.

The Gay Language: Polari makes comeback, but not really.

June 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Gay slang was heavily used in the 1960s around the time that prosecution was causing us to riot and fight back for equal civil rights. It allowed the GLBT community to communicate in a heterosexual environment without fear of being outed, hated, or attacked as being homosexual.

In the UK, a gay language known as Polari sprang up, but not much has been written about the subject. As scholars delve more into GLBT history, activism, and effects, interest has piqued. Apparently, it’s been hard to track down exact origins or dictionaries of words due to it’s oral nature. (ha.. bad sexual pun, sorry).

However, some small efforts have been made. Some Polari words actually made their way into mainstream language, and some are words we still use today. Here are some common examples:

bod – body (simple, right?)
butch – masculine, masculine lesbian (this has become slightly pejorative)
dish – an attractive male, or buttocks (a term chauvinists use for women now)
drag – clothes, esp. women’s clothes
fruit – a queen, now also pejorative unless you’re gay

It’s not too surprising that a gay slang developed in the UK. British people mostly have an almost unintelligible slang to Americans anyway. Hilariously enough, in a dictionary of British slang I found the following entry:

gannet Noun. A greedy person.

Sound familiar?

Obama: DADT to keep a cohesive military unit?

June 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Today, the Gay and Lesbian Issues Examiner reported on Rachel Maddow’s fiery remarks about President Obama’s alleged hypocrisy on GLBT support.

Maddow quoted Obama on his claim that keeping Don’t Ask Don’t Tell “protected military unit cohesion.”

Despite his lack of initiative on overturning this in general, I’d like to point out that this excuse of protecting unit cohesion is no longer valid, not that it ever was.

Andy Stoll, executive director of the Fort Collins’ Lambda Community Center, compared this instance to when they began allowing women into the military.

“It’s the idea that when you’re in battle you’re going to have the distraction of having someone you’re attracted to in the field,” he said.

I’ve covered this before, but reasonably so. Andy and I held the same belief that honestly, people assume that when gay people are in a unit, they think that these individuals are going to be constantly hitting on the other men.

“We are just like everyone else,” said Andy. “We have the ability to control ourselves and to behave in a way that is professional and cohesive to the unit.”

In fact, Andy added that DADT does more detrmiment because there are soldiers out there who will never be able to truly bond with the other soldiers, because “they have this looming fear of whether they are going to be outed or not.”

This issue is moot. WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS. Case in point.

Here is Maddow’s segment:

Recap on KXRQ Transgender Children Radio Show

June 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

GLAAD has been keeping almost up-to-the-minute updates on the situation that is unfolding between KRXQ Radio of Sacramento and their advertisers due to the defamatory statements a morning talk show made about transgendered children. I dare you to listen to the segment if only to survive their cackling voices, ugh.

For those of you not ballsy enough to click that thing, on May 28, the Rob, Arnie and Dawn show held a segment about transgendered children and people in which Rob and Arnie primarily made completely ignorant, dehumanizing and offensive comments.

I transcribed some of the following, but read at your own risk. I was pretty outraged.

They described transfolks as “phony or created in our culture, or completely treatable, there’s no such thing. This is (sic) the look at me part of our society…”

That the “….transgender movement in America is so phony…”

“…What makes me sick about these are these parents in America who allow their children to…clomp around the house in a dress and wear make-up… of course he thinks he’s a girl, the parents’ aren’t taking him out to play baseball.”

They said transfolks, particularly transyouth, are “…liars and need attention….”

“They are freaks and weirdos.”

They spent about 30 minutes on the show making dehumanizing comments while Dawn squawked in the background against their statements. Rob and Arnie continued to scrutinize her. They started promoting child abuse when they began discussing an Omaha family who supported their transgender child in her transition.

I’d almost pity them because they seem SO trapped in gender roles that they feel fear and anger at the idea that gender can be different from biology, but this kind of dehumanizing behavior is incredibly alarming, especially when they seem to promote child abuse so nonchalantly.

On June 5, GLAAD mediated communication between advertisers and other media, starting with companies Bank of America, Verizon, and Carl’s Jr, whom all pulled their advertising from the KRXQ radio station. Wells Fargo, Nissan, and AT&T soon followed. Also in support of transgendered people are Chipotle, Snapple, Sonic, and on June 5, McDonald’s.

Yesterday, June 7, Rob Williams, who is apparently brilliant enough to own the show, issued a statement claiming that they will apologize on Thursday, June 11. However, many commenters and bloggers on the glaadblog.org website have been stating that KRXQ is “capable of crocodile tears” as it’s not the first time an incident like this has been made. It’s also worth noting that some commenters have said that Thursday usually has higher listener ratings, thus the delay of the apology until then.

Although this specific person did not leave any contact info, their tip might be valuable to keep in mind as the week comes to a close.

That was the recap, and I’ll keep ya’ll updated.

Boulder: Gay Couple Harassed in Parking Lot

May 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

According to The Denver Post, early Sunday morning (like 2 AM early), a couple was confronted by a man that they say shouted “anti-gay, derogatory names at them” in a parking lot, a media release said.

The man allegedly slammed one of their car doors shut and grabbed a cell phone from one of the victim’s hands.

Boulder has a zero tolerance policy for hate crimes within its county, which was implemented in 2005.

The investigation is still ongoing, and if you have any information you are asked to phone the Boulder police.
