About

YOU ARE NOT YOUR CAREER.

I am L Viscera. I am the new gonzo journalism. I like to write, design, record history, make history, and otherwise be frustrated by WordPress’ limited functions. This blog was started for the Technical Journalism class at Colorado State University that concerns online writing. It has been expanded to include my thesis research, my work at the local GLBTQ community center, and whatever else.

YOU ARE NOT YOUR SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

This would be an adequate space that ever so slightly extrapolates on the existential implications of my queer tendencies. However, I have come to a point where the ways that I am marginalized in this society will no longer hold me back from participation. How… important.

Well, it’s important, at least, to note that at the inception of this blog, I felt alienated from this in the summer of 09. Within a matter of months I have become deeply nested into the GLBTQ community in Fort Collins and am invested in fair and accurate representation of my community in media, local and beyond.

High five for growth.

YOU ARE NOT YOUR GENDER IDENTITY.

Funny thing is, this is the first time I’m admitting to having an online identity. I have blogged on a personal level for about eight years. I used to write really angsty, shitty poetry. Now it’s more mature and deep shitty poetry. I do spoken word, and go to drag events. I was also a zombie once or twice.

I also do photography, but wherever that is online is intermittent.

YOU ARE NOT YOUR BELIEFS.

In a more serious and, I guess, personal sense, I am passionate about advocacy journalism, equal rights, fair and accurate reporting, and fully believe that objectivity is dead.

One of my goals with this blog is to educate myself and others on GLBTQA issues as well as be able to disseminate them properly to my audience, so I welcome any constructive criticism, suggestions, etc, that you can offer.

Hmmm… on that last note, I do hate blogs, and I hate regurgitated information. So you will not necessarily find updates about the current state of marriage affairs in Maine, or much of other “objective” information that is found in mainstream media outlets. What I’ll be doing is taking a deeper look at those issues by examining the border between Queer and heteronormative media. By analyzing and critiquing these boundaries, one can hope that those borders will become porous, begin to breathe, and thus dissolve. But only with force, only with force.

YOU ARE AN EVER CONSTANT SUBJECTIVE OBSERVER OF THE DYNAMIC CHANGE OF THIS WORLD.

Thus the chomping bits. Biting at the bit of revolution. Eh?

You’re a remarkable writer, Ms. Elle.

    And a remarkable zombie.

To be honest, I find you dangerously articulate. But there are no such things as equal rights. There are only rights. And rights by definition apply equally to every individual. That is their distinguishing characteristic. Your rights, my rights, everyone’s rights stop where another’s begin. “Equal rights” is a tautological term, as is “human rights” and “individual rights.” But I don’t mean to quibble.

Actually, I’m more interested in your deep shitty poetry. Post a link.

In this country, what we perceive as “rights” are often merely privileges, and the systems in place award privileges to certain groups, particularly those in power, over other marginalized groups. So when we speak of equal rights– what we mean is, equal treatment under the law by the systems in place.
